Google Desktop 2 Beta

I just intalled the new version 2 (Beta) of Google Desktop. It now has a QuickSearch feature that works like Apple’s Spotlight, i.e. search as you type.

It also has a new cool Sidebar thingy, with panels such as Google Mail, Google News, RSS feeds, photo feeds (I can display pictures from my favorite Flickr feeds), « What’s Hot » links, stock info, weather… It’s much slicker than anything similar Yahoo! has ever done, like their Toolbar or the Messenger panels.

Google Desktop has an API and an SDK so you can write your own panels for the new Sidebar. I think this new version is even kind of competing with Yahoo! Widgets (a.k.a. Konfabulator), except Google’s APIs look more complicated (all the samples are in C++, vs. Konfabulator SDK’s mix of XML and JavaScript). Of course, Konfabulator widgets look really cool, but I think Google’s sidebar is more practical.

Back to default MT templates

I have decided to go back to the default Movable Type templates, just because I was missing tons of features like comments and trackback, that I had somehow removed. The default templates don’t look half bad anyway. I’ll probably tweak them so that the right sidebar stays on all pages.

Old interview in ContentManagement365

The magic of Google: I just stumbled upon an interview I did last year for ContentManagement365.com, about the implementation of the Athens2004 Olympics Web Site… Unfortunately, the site requires registration, but the article found its way into Google’s cache. ZX Spectrum is Alive

J’ai reçu cette semaine un colis étonnant en provenance de New York: un mini-CD du groupe Polonais AY Riders, intitulé « ZX Spectrum is Alive« , édité par le label 8bitpeoples, et accompagné d’un pin sympa!

Je n’avais rien commandé, mais j’ai de temps en temps échangé des mails avec Yerzmyey (le leader du groupe), et j’ai toutes leurs précédentes productions sur mon iPod, donc j’imagine qu’il s’agit d’une opération de fidélisation de leurs fans :-) AY Riders et 8bitpeoples incarnent le N+1 de la zik type rétrocomputing: ils ne réarrangent pas des musiques de jeux ou de démos connues, ils composent des musiques originales en utilisant uniquement le chip de leur ordinosaure favori: le ZX Spectrum dans le cas de AY Riders. Un groupe dans la même mouvance: YM Rockerz, qui, eux, utilisent des Atari ST pour leurs compositions…

The C64 Take-away podcast

Les Podcasts, c’est sympa, le problème étant qu’on arrive assez rapidement à se télécharger environ 50 heures de trucs à écouter par jour. Ma dernière trouvaille: The C64 Take-away podcast, un podcast de remix de zik 8-bit provenant de l’incontournable RKO. Indispensable pour prendre votre dose de Martin Galway ou de Rob Hubbard.
